It still is a lot of work to program computers. Reprogramming meant complete rewiring of circuits. But Von Neumann's invention offered a solution. Now one could feed the computer with data that can be stored in memory.

In this period of time computers still had some 200.000 components like resistors, diodes, and transistors. And with the rising numbers of parts the reliability went down. Partly because of the weak spot in all electronic circuits: soldering points.

Also the mounting of the hardware on a circuitry board formed a problem. But soon the printed circuit offered a way out.
But this again caused problems because the heat of soldering some times damaged parts.

In this period the slow and faulty Magnetic Drums are replaced with Magnetic Core Memories. No computer is shipped without it any more.
